AUTISM: Rise in rate of autism is real

From the CEC Smart Brief:

According to a report in the March issue of Pediatrics, the prevalence of autism is increasing with successively younger children, particularly among those born between 1987 and 1992. Epidemiologists discredit the theory attributing the rising rates to physicians' current practice of classifying children as having autism, when, in the past, they might have labeled the youngsters as having mental retardation or speech/language problems. Study: Why children with autism avoid eye contact:

A report in the March 6 issue of Nature Neuroscience found that the area of the brain associated with negative feelings is abnormally active when a child with autism looks at nonthreatening faces. MedicalNewsToday (U.K.) (3/7)
