According to a report in the March issue of Pediatrics, the prevalence of autism is increasing with successively younger children, particularly among those born between 1987 and 1992. Epidemiologists discredit the theory attributing the rising rates to physicians' current practice of classifying children as having autism, when, in the past, they might have labeled the youngsters as having mental retardation or speech/language problems.
