Disabilities common in very premature babies

From the CEC Smart Brief:

Although recent medical advances have improved very premature babies' chances of survival, a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates they did not reduce the infants' risk for disability. According to the research, a large proportion of babies born prematurely with weights of 2.2 pounds or less had low IQ, asthma, cerebral palsy or at least one other kind of significant disability.
