The principal of a New York City academy allegedly told many educators to boost the failing grades of students with special needs. "In some cases, the students haven't submitted any work at all, and they were failing the exams," a teacher said. This is the stupidity of school accountability, 60% of our "report card grade" relies on student progress (credit accumulation). 25% relies on student performance on state Regents exams.

Of course principals want us to inflate our grades. Otherwise, the school closes down.

A group of teachers were advised verbatim by our school's PSO representative (New Visions) that "You teachers can stick to your high standards and watch the school close down or you can exercise 'flexibility' and keep the school open." I don't know how flexible this "advisor" wants us to be, but I'm pulling things from elementary science curricula for 10th graders. That's as far as I can flex.
