Educational Toys Shopping

I just blogged about my daughter's high interest in technology gadgets. She's a technological child, a child born for technology, really absorbed in gadgets that I even haven't heard of (shame on me, a Technology Liaison).

Last Christmas, she already knew what gifts to ask us and to ask Santa, she already made a list in her head. We brought her to "Toys R Us" and let her pick the toys she wanted us to buy for her. She ignored the dolls, the "girlie thingies", but instead to our suprise went to the technology section and looked over the educational digital games and techie gadgets.

What digital games did you buy your kids this Christmas? Too late for this warning I saw in the news...

Buyer beware when shopping for children's ed-tech gear

Parents should choose carefully when shopping for digital-learning devices or, better yet, encourage their kids to use Mathforum.org, Kaboose.com and other free educational sites, experts advise. Some educators view gadgets like LeapFrog's Fly Pentop Computer as little more than toys. CANOE (Toronto, Ontario)

Thanks for stopping by my blog, you are always welcome.

My son is 16 and he is totally into anything electronic. So needless to say his big gift was a TI 89 calculator. He wants to learn to program in C++.

How old is your daughter and what did you end up buying her?

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog today, and you are welcome anytime. :)

So, how old is your daughter? I can't wait to teach my daughter how to use a computer and introduce her to technology.

FRED, Wow! I got myself my first digital camera, 8 megapixels Polaroid, and I was so happy too. I can relate to how your daughters feel *smile.

PAULA my daughter is 7 years old, sometimes she surprise me ...

BABYPINK, Nag-update ka na pala?! Mali yata yung entry page na pinasukan ko ah, hehe. I'm back blog hopping again too...

TERI, You bought your mathematician son a Texas Instruments calculator? Makes me prouder of my home country, it's most probably assembled in Baguio City, Philippines! We have a very huge (like a small town) of Texas Instruments factory there where most TI chips are made and most TI gadgets are assembled.

My daughter is 7 years old, and I bought her PIXTER by Fisher-Price, which I thought costs $30, and my jaw fell when in the cashier I found out that it costs $89! Well, it makes her busy while on the road...good for me and my hubby too *smile.

LORALOO, Hello! My daughter is 7, how about your kid? Both hubby and I are tech addicts, I guess that's why she's interested in tech stuff too. Maybe you can expose your child to tech gadgets as early as now, who knows, you might trigger the Einstein in her/him *wink.

LAURA, My daughter says she wants to be a teacher too when she grows up, I guess I'm a role model to her *smile. Her interest in techie stuff though is not something I've prepared my pocket for, haha.

CHRIS POWELL, You've been a teacher in Australia too, and now you're teaching in Japan? Wow, you're a travelling teacher! Let us know more about the different cultures you've tried yourself to adapt for sometime. I'll be linking you up so I can check on your entries more often.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. You are welcome, of course.

Both you and your daughter sound far more ahead technologically than I am. I don't even want a cell phone. My professor friend says even blogs now are outdated. Podcasts are in.

Sol, I didnt get him any digital games or anything like that since he already has a leap pad. Also he has a Leap Phonic Library he got for his birthday. He takes it with him wherever he goes..that pretty much quiets him down especially when we are on the road. Hes having soo much fun with it.

As for using the computer, my little one spends more time now infront of the monitor, am a little worried though..but so far its all good.

Sol, your daughter is lucky her momma is a very talented teacher! She will really excel in education, from the way things are looking! Most kids really emulate their parents!!...and your bright daughter is a definite "clone" of you & your husband!!

As for educational toys, it's really unfortunate that they are priced so expensively and there aren't very many TV advertisements made about it! If they did, I'm sure kids would enjoy them more!

I remember my dad teaching us all the game of chess and my brothers really took their skills to another level. (Ewan ko ba kung bakit 'di hilig ng brain ko ang chess!!) My uncle purposely made Friday nights "family games night", and all my cousins and I thought it was so fun! Not to mention, it was very educational. Years later, we still carry the tradition. Now that we are starting to have a new generation of kids, our kids are learning to play the games we played!

Now, I watch my cousin's son, and I am amazed at how he works on the computer, the DVD player, how to switch from TFC to regular cable TV, his video games, microwave, pati rin yung Magic Mic alam!!... and he's only in kindergarten and he cracks me up! He acts like a grown-man in a 5yr old body!Anything gadgety, he figures out how to operate!

Off the subject: My parents are looking forward to meeting you. I can't wait to see you in the summer! You will love it here in Los Angeles, because it won't be so humid. =) I know that we're planning a trip to NYC sometime in mid-July, for a wedding...but I am not teaching summer session this year so I'll definitely be able to hang out with you and Zarelle!

They controlled my sked. Promise, i will make up with you next time.
