Hazard pay fails to attract educators

Most teachers enter the profession not to make a ton of money, but because they want to make a difference, writes former longtime Los Angeles teacher Walt Gardner. Because most value working conditions and their ability to enrich students' lives more than salary, so-called combat pay likely will remain ineffective in attracting educators to schools serving poor students, where effecting such positive change can be extremely challenging, he says.
