Special educators call for resignation of school chairman

Rhode Island School for the Deaf director Lori Dunsmore attributes the recent tensions to her plans to align the school’s curriculum with state standards and grade-level expectations, providing an academic structure she says the school has lacked.

Twenty teachers at the 132-year-old Rhode Island School for the Deaf support asking the chairman of the school's board to resign, citing what they call inappropriate teacher discipline. The school's fourth director in six years says the conflict focuses on her push for more rigorous academics; teachers say they welcome change but have not yet seen any serious proposals.
