D.C. mayor wins initial approval to take over schools

The D.C. Council granted preliminary approval yesterday for the mayor to seize control over the 55,000-student school system, with the school superintendent reporting directly to him. A final vote could come as early as April 17, and while Congress must also approve the move, the first changes could come by fall. The Washington Post (4/4), The Washington Times (4/4)
