Council Grants Rhee Strengthened Firing Authority

The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to give Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee added authority to fire nonunion central office employees.

Lawmakers voted 10-3 Tuesday to reclassify some workers as employees with no tenure.

Councilmembers are still debating another bill that would authorize the funds to close 23 public schools. Mayor Adrian Fenty requested both bills, and both have been met with much protests from different fronts.

The Washington Teacher's Union and other unions representing school employees oppose the personnel bill. And the D.C. Council has been pushing to have a say in which schools will be closed.
