Literacy curriculum helps district close achievement gaps

A new literacy program is helping some Virginia children with special needs, English-language learners and other disadvantaged students to close achievement gaps and pass standardized reading tests. Student progress under the Steps to Literacy kindergarten through second-grade curriculum has "truly amazed" first-grade teacher Amanda Greenland, who says students quickly master once-difficult topics.
