Mistake-Riddled Tests Go Home With D.C. Students

If the D.C. school system's office of teaching and learning were to be graded on take-home tests given to some elementary students this week, the office would get a failing grade.

Parents found spelling errors and grammatical mistakes on the practice tests.

For example, the word "device" was mistakenly spelled with an "s" as "devise."

The name of a boy in a reading practice section also was spelled inconsistently.

Gina Arlotto, the mother of a third-grader, called the blunders to the attention of administrators. Arlotto says her child was confused by the spelling differences.

Parents say that some teachers sent home notes pointing out the mistakes. Others said they were told to administer them anyway.

Arlotto says she received an e-mail from the new chief of teaching and learning, Sherry Ulery, apologizing and explaining that the original draft was sent to the printer instead of the final copy.
Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee wrote in an e-mail that this was a "significant problem" and that the school system would "do better next time."
