Iowa district offers bonuses to new, experienced special educators

An Iowa district will spend $62,716 on bonuses to retain and attract special-education teachers, who are sometimes lured away to regular classrooms once they encounter the additional stress and constant paperwork. "I know that we've lost some good candidates to larger districts who offer bonuses," said retiring special educator Linda Myers. "We want quality people, and we want people who will stay."
