Report urges board-certified teachers to take leadership positions

Is it just a coincidence that this report came out yesterday, just one day ahead of this article from The Washington Post which will come out tomorrow?

*** Education Week : Teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the group says, should take a more active role in policy discussions and instructional decisions, and promote a definition of teacher quality that goes beyond test results.

“If we continue to sit by and let others define effective teaching, we will always be reactors, not actors, on the school reform stage where the policies that control our daily work play out,” says the
report...

*** In another news (
The Washington Post), Parker said the meetings, which will take place Tuesday and Wednesday at McKinley Technological High School in Northeast, will also be attended by D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee, who "will be available for Q and A at a designated time during each session."

...center on a proposal by Rhee to dramatically raise salaries in return for concessions on seniority rights and a willingness of teachers to be evaluated on the basis of their success in raising student test scores.

This report may shed some light . In reality, there are many effective teachers who do not want be evaluated based on a two-page worth of answer sheets our students bubble in every spring, and there are many students who do not want to be taught to the test.

I am very very concerned...Whatever happens now in DC Public Schools can set a precedent for teacher standards/ evaluations across the country.
