Science project helps girl with Bell's palsy explain condition

Culver City fifth-grader Kiana Deane tries to help her classmates understand the science behind her limited self-expression -- and struggles to come to terms with her own brand of beauty.

Kiana Deane, who cannot smile due to Bell's palsy, wanted to help her classmates understand that she was smiling on the inside. "I get teased, questioned and misjudged because I am unable to smile," she wrote. "Well, maybe I don't have the muscles or nerves to smile, but I have kindness, respect and I am going to live a successful life." Los Angeles Times
