Tough Times Never Last But Tough People Do

Everytime I stumble in life, I think of these words; I immediately get up and I'm ready to go again. This is my guiding principle in life. But I didn't just invent it. I adopted it from Robert H. Schuller's book "Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!".

I first got hold of this book way back in college, when I was fixing my grandmother's shelf. This book fell down before me. Mang (what I call my grandma) was the chief of a regional hospital then, and one of her staff gave this book to her with some thank you notes at the back of the cover page. I got interested because of the title and borrowed the book from her. From then on, the words on its pages became my energizer. I couldn't put it down. I believe it motivates me to succeed in life!

True to what it says... name your problem, and you name your possibility! That's the message in Dr. Robert H. Schuller's bestseller, Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do! Dr. Schuller shows you how to build a positive self-image, no matter what your problem. Whether it's unemployment, poor health, loneliness, fear or anything else that blocks your success, you can turn your negative into a positive. No matter how tough times get, you have the potential to achieve the best of life.

Let me give you a jumpstart.

What is the secret ingredient of tough people that enables them to succeed? Why do they survive the tough times when others overcome them? Why do they win when others lose? Why do they soar when others sink?

The answer is very simple. It's all in how they perceive their problems. They look at problems realistically and practically. They understand the principles that pertain to all problems. (page 57, Tough Times Never Last But Tough People Do, Robert Schuller)

I am not promoting the book but I am sharing it with you. It made me a whole new person. It changed my life. I believe it will help you too.

Minsan nakabasa ako ng isang poem then marami akong nalaman through the message of that poem... Minsan may sense, minsan naman NEVER MIND o WHAT'S NEW? na iba sa iba... TOUGH TIMES NEVER LAST BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO... Siguro sa City Library baka may mahanap ako dun or I inform this to my aunt na teacher sa Manila at baka meron siyang makita dun...

Perception and attitude are key. Obstacles can either be viewed as stumbling blocks or stepping stones. Our actions are usually based on our perceptions. Wrong perception leads to wrong judgment. Thomas Edison is the man when it comes to overcoming failures. Here are some of his words that encourage me every time I stumble:

“I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.”

“Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

In the end, it doesn't matter how many times I stumble in life. What matters to me is how quickly I could get up and recover.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Schuller. When I used to live in El Cerrito, I always make it a point to watch his Sunday TV mass at the Crystal Cathedral because his gospel is always inspiring and full of hope. When I moved to San Pablo, I don't get his show anymore from my cable and I missed it so much.

People becomes tough because of their faith in God. God is our only hope and guide to do good things. God is so good that even though you thought you lost the battle, in the end he will still show you that you won it kahit dumaan ka pa sa butas ng karayom.

Guess what, sobrang liit, tapos paper back copy pa.

JOHN CLARK, the quotes you gave by Thomas Edison are all inspiring indeed. I will add those up to my little black book that I always bring around with me. Is there a book about his biography that you recommend us to read/ buy? I'm interested.

NAVYBLU (LIZ), just give me a shout when you need me to temporarily take over your assignment in Pinoy Teachers Network, I got your back this time. Please focus on your trainings, you deserve it. I know how much it counts on your being an effective teacher *wink* See you girl next week.

Everybody go through challenges in life and thats a fact. No ones is immune from lifes problems or adversities that come their way..its how you deal with those problems by not letting them control you. :-)

Like you I have gone through many challenges and in the process learned my lessons – it took a lot of prayers and faith in Him. Sometimes you just have to reframe your problems and work thru them otherwise you be overwhelmed..
have a relaxing weekend.:-)

another similar quote to this is "when the going gets tough, the tough gets going." while there's life, one should never surrender. "tough situations" are all a matter of perspective. the key here is to be positive always.

Nice post Sol. I have watched Dr Schuler quite a few times on TV and he certainly speaks with clarity and conviction with that very well modulated voice. You simply know that the man has got something to say.

For those of us who've been through a lot and survived, conquered our challenges and perhaps exceeded our expectations, we find a great deal of wisdom in the saying - "the only real mistake we make is one from which we learn nothing"..
