From the CEC Smart Brief:

In a press release, the American Psychological Association highlights research in its January issue of Neuropsychology that indicates children with autism have impaired memory ability when it comes to processing complex word or picture information or spatial data. Researcher Nancy Minshew says the memory problems can cause people with autism to focus on detail rather than the whole picture, thereby missing what most other people think is important.
