N.C. plans alerts to better locate people with cognitive disabilities

A North Carolina program modeled after the national Amber Alert will help police find people with Alzheimer's disease or cognitive disabilities who have wandered away from their caregivers. "They're disoriented, and they get out in the woods or in a big urban area, and then they hide because they're scared," said Johnston County Sheriff's Office Capt. Buck Pipkin. "They won't respond if you call out their name, so you basically have to walk right up on them to locate them." The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.)
