New teaching fellowships modeled after Rhodes Scholarships

Beginning in 2009, top students can receive $30,000 stipends to attend graduate education programs at Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia or several others in return for a commitment to teach for three years in low-income schools. Philanthropists hope the $17 million program will attract more top students to teaching as well as help overhaul teacher education in general.
