Teaching method helps young children grasp math concepts

A math-teaching method that builds on young children's practical experiences is gaining new life as some districts have found it boosts standardized math scores. Cognitively Guided Instruction, first developed in the early 1990s, uses concepts of getting more treats, losing toys and sharing favorite items to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
