Naalala ko noong ako'y estudyante pa, masyado akong pala-aral at achiever. Gusto ko kasi parati kong pinaliligaya ang mga magulang ko dahil sa mga matataas na grades ko. Maganda rin naman na ipinagmamalaki nila ako noon at pride ako ng aking klase dahil nga parati akong nananalo pag ipinambabato nila ako sa mga quizbee o oratorical contests na yan. Ops! Wag na nating isama ang Math Olympiad, never akong napili dyan, hindi ko forte ang math, hehe.
Pero nang makarating ako ng fourth year high school, ang dating katuwaan lang na kompetisyon sa akin ay naging seryosohan na. May biglang sumisingit sa honor roll at tinatalo nya ako sa mga grades ko. Hah! Magaling talaga sya sa science at sa math, walang biro...naku! Kung saan pa naman napaka-bobo ko, doon sya nag-overtake sa akin.
Hindi ko makalimutan na talagang natuliro ako noong malapit na ang graduation namin at kailangan nang i-break ang tie sa honor roll namin. Matindi ang tensyon noong final exams. Grabe, di ko inaasahan na magagawa ko ang aking pinaka-iiwasan.
Opo, nangopya ako. Kailangan ko ng sobrang taas na grade, no mistake sa papel, excellent score baga, kaya ko nagawa iyon. Nasa ilalim ng upuan ng katabi ko ang notebook nya, lakas-loob kong binuklat habang hindi nakatingin ang teacher. Hindi naman ako nahuli. Pero sobrang guilty ako, ikinumpisal ko agad yon pagkatapos.
Hindi ko na matandaan kung anong naging score ko doon sa exam na iyon. Pero hindi ko nakuha ang gusto kong place sa honor roll (wag na nating ipamalita, dyahe). Ganyan talaga, ang mga pangyayaring ginawa sa maling paraan ay hindi nagtatagumpay.
Ngayong teacher na ako, syempre pinagbabawalan ko ang mga estudyante ko na mangopya. Istrikto ako sa loob ng classroom. Pero kung minsan talaga bumabalik sa akin ang mga nakaraan, at natatawa nalang ako.

Aba! Mas matindi kami diyan sa mga kopyahan at dayaan sa exam. May mga signal pa nga kami pag yes or no or true or false kahit sa AbCd o multiple choice. Tapos gumagawa pa kami ng pagkaliliiit na sulat sa papel na nakaroll sa isang lastiko at may thumb tacks nakakakabit sa ilalim ng mesa at pag lalapit ang titser bibitawan mo ang iyong hawak para tumago ng kusa sa ilalim ng desk. At saka pansin ko noon pag may exam ang daming may mga sipon ano kaya ang nakalagay sa kanilang mga panyo. Yong iba naman na dati walang tatoo nagkakatatoo sa kanilang mga nakatagong bahagi ng katawan kaya maganda pag maputi ang katabi mong klassmeyt at panay ang taas ng palda na parang naiinitan kaya lang naturnoff ako aba puro tatoo pala itong crush ko. Mas matapang pa nga sa amin klasmeyt naming babae kasi nangaagaw mismo ng papel ng may papel. Pinagpapawisan noon kaeskwela naming mga magagaling sa math kasi ang babarako ng mga babae sa amin kinukuha mga pael nila kaya sila yong scratch kunwari papel pag dadating ang titser. Sa awa ng Diyos yong mga bobo sa math ang mga milyonarya na ngayon sa aming high school class kasi malalakas ang loob. Tawanan nga kami noong reunion hindi nga pala nadadaan sa talinong iskolastika ang pagyaman kundi sa abilidad sapagkat mas succesful yong mga average ang kaalaman kaysa mga sobrang tatalino. "Educational Incapacity" ba ang tawag doon kasi sila puro bookish yong iba praktikal.
Reasons for cheating? - only if I'm unprepared. I hate those tests where memorization is key. I'm more likely to perform better (and always honest :-) ) in exams that focus on whys/hows than whos/whens. That explains why my exams (during my teaching days) were more on the practical and application side than theories. As such, it's usually difficult to cheat in my class. It's not about what you know but on how to apply the things you know.
I am proud that I did not cheat in school. i know a lot of my friends who did cheat. The real reason was the pressure to get higher grades. Yong isa cheat siya ng cheat at dahil kailangan pa niyang makakuha ng higher grade, sumali siya sa isang beauty contest (kahit di namn siya maganda), para lang ma-exempt sa 3rd grading periodical exam sa English... hay, buhay.. ",)
nagcheat ako noon sa test kase hindi talaga ako nakapag-aral. ayokong mabokya kaya ginawa ko yun. alam ko rin na pag nakakuha ako ng mababang marka, magagalit ang nanay ko...nung magtapat sa akin ang anak kong lalaki (grade 2) pa lang na nagcheat siya, nagulat ako at napaiyak. kung ano ang dahilan ko nun at nagcheat ako, yun din ang dahilan niya.

di ko nasubukan mag-cheat kahit naisin ko. lagi kasing nagkakataon na sa harap ako nakaupo, kahit malaki ako at natatakpan ko ang nasa likuran ko :) I like seating infront because you don't get bored and sleepy kaya attentive ka, kunwari. yung nasa likod kse, madalas iskul-bukol yon! At ang tendency ng titser ay pansinin at bantayan ang mga nasa likod.
mahirap makapag-cheat kse ang test papers namin lagi in 3 sets. iba ang nasa katabi mo, pati na yung nasa harap at likod.

I think one reason students cheat is not taking the time to properly prepare for the test, and not taking good notes. To many wait until the last minute to study as well. If they sat down and actually took the time to do things right, they wouldn't be as worried about the results.

ATOY, naku, pinaalala mo sakin mga ginagawa ng iba kong kaklase pag exams. Oo nga, kung may color coding ang MMDA, mas maraming coding dati pag exams na. Di naman ako sumasali kasi kadalasan alam ko na ang mga sagot sa tests, nakakatuwa lang talaga ang mga skills na nagagawa ng mga estudyante para lang di mabokya...
JOHN CLARK, i don't like those identification type (where you have to memorize) and matching types and multiple choice typs (where you can guess) too, but most exams use those strategy because they are easy t make. I usually give open ended questions because my students are usually not verbal learners and I let them express themselves in ways where they are more comfortable doing...not answering worksheets or doing lengthy exams of course.
KARS, haha, may mga kaklase ako na sumasali sa mga ganyang beauty contests para mahila pataas ang grades nila. Too bad di ako mahilig dyan, one of the boys ako, nasa Citizen's Army Training ang focus ko dati dahil squadron commander yata ako noon...walang appeal sakin ang mga beauty contests, haha.

DARLENE, maswerte ka naman, naalagaan kayo ng magaling na teacher. Kasi naranasa ka yang iba't-ibang sets ng test papers noong nasa college na ako.
TITO SAM, hmmm... sa estudyante may sarili silang rason para magdaya...sa pulitiko naman (mas marunong at mas nakakatanda) iba naman ang dahilan nila para mandaya. Ayokong maging pulitiko, mahirap magsinungaling at mandaya, araw-araw siguro nyan ako nasa kumpisalan, hehe.
STATIC BRAIN,for some students, yep taht could be the reason. I remember in college, cramming worked wonders for me, ang tataas ng test results ko pag nag-cram ako. Pero when I prepare way ahead before the test naman, ang baba ng scores ko.

yes, students have various reasons and the very prominent one is the desire to pass without an effort. katamaran ba. with my experiences as a mother, ang sinasabi ko lang sa kids ko - "it is your choice - kung gusto mong mangamote sa exams, then do not study."
i did not expecte them to get good grades only but also to develop responsibility. yun ang isang dapat na rason why they have to study. i know that kids get bored. isa sa rason why they do not study then cheat. but i think it has to be explained that there is a time for everything.
one reason, too, why students cheat is peer influence. kakalungkot pero di natin hawak ito. but the important thing is, we have to be always there to guide them so if there are influences, ang manaig ay ang influence pa rin natin.

ako naman nung HS di ako marunong mangopya o mag-cheat. pagdating sa college dun ako naging expert sa cheating. kasi naman gusto ko na lang matapos ako sa kolehiyo para makagraduate at makapagtrabaho na. hindi na importante sa akin ang grades basta makapasa lang.
a variety of reasons indeed...but i guess it's mainly about passing the subject or getting a good grade without much need for diligently reviewing/studying one's lessons.
on a personal note, i haven't really cheated in my entire life as a student. i once let someone copy my paper though...and i felt bad about it afterwards.
BING, kaya nga di ko masabi sa parents ko noon ang kauna-unahan at huling pangongopya ko noon sa exam dahil takot ako na masermunan, hehe. Pero sa anak ko, I give her high expectations, para may allowance pa kung sakaling bumaba ang grade nya. Mabuti naman at mahilig mag-aral, sana huwag syang magbabago.

JAZ, I was a very generous student then; I let everyone copy from my paper, haha, but never thought I will cheat myself. Never did that again, it felt really bad!
I always sat in the back of the class and kept it "on the real" w/ my schoolwork, so I didn't cheat. My friends in HS were real geniuses too, but I didn't want to copy their work.
I gave cheaters a real hard time in HS tho. (Boy, did I make enemies with the 'questionable' Honor Roll students!) I would say things in their face or under my breath and made them totally feel guilty, but I would never snitch. I just liked seeing them loathe in paranoia & guilt.
I respected those teachers who made things impossible to cheat on. One math teacher made it fair to the point that even the tests in math were hard to cheat on 'cuz after you did the computation, you had to explain your answers in essay form! You were pretty much doomed if you didn't study.
Hmmm, I do remember...
In 11th grade, I took an AP American History class and the only way to keep up w/ the work was to copy assignments off others unless you were a walking encyclopedia.
The teacher was totally old-school, gave lots of reading and assignments. The teacher said there are 2 ways to get a passing grade. Either you earned it by points, or you pass the AP test. She promised that if we passed the AP test, she'd change the grade to automatic A's no matter what.
But I didn't cheat, so I took the straight honest D--both semesters. There goes my whole college career! Down the drain.
But I was pretty confident that would pass the AP test so I just paid a little more attention in class. That summer, I got the score in the mail. I passed w/ a 4! The teacher changed my grades to A's both semesters. Only 13 out of 90 (3 sections of AP USH) passed that year.
Now that Saturday is my 10th yr HS Reunion time I almost want to tell a couple of those not-so-honorable Honor Roll Students, "Hey, You can take your A's and just shove-it...B3O#-Es!!" just kidding....I won't dare!
hehehe... nahuli ako sa pagcocomment... Excited pa naman ako about sa topic na 'to.... Yup, inaamin kong naka-cheat ako pero at least hindi ako nangongodigo... Pero I realise na nakakabawas ng self-esteem sa sarili ang pangongopya ng ideas from other ideas... I learned already. Lam mo na yun TeacherSol... :-) Nga pala exams namin next week, semi-finals. As far as I could remember, di ako nakapag-cheat sa exams and I thought yon na lang maipagmamalaki ko. Kumbaga, coming "clean". Pero I realize, cheater din ako kasi although I never copied from my classmates, I tolerated them naman coz di ba pag may nakikita kang mali and you don't do something about it, accomplice ka. Eye opener sa kin yon because of an incident back in high school na nahuli yong katabi ko, pero pati ako damay. Kasi daw dapat, ni-report ko yon accdg to my teacher. I was really angry that time kasi sabi ko nananahimik ako...but then may point rin teacher ko...I should have stood up for what is right...
Sa college naman, galit na galit mga katabi ko kasi di sila makakopya sa kin. Hahaha sabi ko ako di madamot, wag lang sa exam. I offered to teach them before the exams. That's the only way I could help pero pag exams na, sori galit-galit muna hehehe.
But as to the reasons why students cheat? Hmmm i think kapit sa patalim lang din hehehe. Lahat naman halos tayo siguro, na-experience na yung wala maisulat sa answer sheets. Pero ako pag ganon, hayaan ko na lang hehehe. Katwiran ko, kaya nag-e-exam para masukat kung may natutunan sa lessons. Cheating defeats the purpose ika nga.
I would rather have a difficult open book exam than a closed book that requires me to memorize tons of things. I have never been a fan of memorization although I know it is essential in some cases. It is sad to fail because "mahina ka mag memorize". There are students who get good grades because of their super memory and I think it is a tragedy if the school system cannot
discern bright students from those who beat the tests with high marks only because of their photographic memories.I think teachers must design exams that focus more on comprehension rather than memorization.
If we cheat to get a tip or a lead to solving the problem, which is totally different than copying answers from the book or your neighbor, I don't see anything wrong with it. That's reflective of reality. When we get out of school, there's no restriction to the tools that we use to solve problems. I like teachers who look at your argument, your approach, your solution and give you points for them. The exactness of the answer is nice but really not a determining factor of being wrong or right. School is for learning. When you get out to the real world and do your stuff, then correctness of answers DO matter.

Naku, madalas gumagawa ng kalokohan ang kapatid ko at ako ang pinagbibintangan ng nanay ko na gumawa, asar-talo talaga! BW, in fairness to myself (pwede ko bang ipagtanggol ang sarili ko dito, wala si Atty. Punzi eh, hehe)...you said it right. The reason why I opened my classmate's notebook was to see if I had the math formula correct. I never give memorization to my students because most of them are not verbal learners. I am a visual and kinaesthetic learner, so I know that memorization doesn't always work for all students.
hay naku...kami po we didnt cheat on the exams itself BUT we cheated on checking them.pasalamat na lang tamad ang mga madre sa school namin magcheck ng papel. hehehehe

I have not been pushing my kids that hard. All I ask of them is to behave in class, stay out of trouble and come home with a passing mark. In the end naman, high grades you got during elementary and high school don't matter that much. Would you go, "hoy, maniwala kayo sakin kasi valedictorian ako nung elementary?" That would only piss off other people. So far naman, I am succeeding. My kids are passing their tests...barely. HAHAHA
Tito Rolly, so true! That's so funny! hahaha, I was one of those who got pissed off when people announce their class rank. I totally admired the "under the radar, very modest" type of smart.
Looking back, my parents never pushed us either. THey neither bragged nor pushed. We didn't have a home wallpapered w/ certificates. I guess I won't wallpaper my house w/ certificates either, when I have kids.
Also, I guess it's much more important to be educated to really "gain a careful thought" than to be "grade-oriented". Not to offend anyone out there, but I've met and talked to some former HS valedictorians and cum laude honors who surprisingly didn't know and couldn't discuss as much as the average street person. Of course our topics of discussion(about issues, religion, politics, current events, philosophies)would occur over coffee and smoke-filled happy hour bars, so maybe that could be the case too. =)
Actually, I've heard of stories na yung mga nag-excel sa loob ng classroom, hindi nag-excel in life. They didn't know how to play the field. hindi sila street smart. Of course, that is neither the rule nor the exception. it always depends on the person, really.
Kahit po ako ay nangongopya, ang pangit lang po kasi sa mga guro ay sa exam, quiz lang kumukuha o binabase ang antas ng talino ng mag-aaral. Kung sino ang mas mataas na nakuha sa exam ay iyon na ang binibigyan nila ng mataas na grado. Hindi nila isinasaalang-alang na ang bawat bata ay may ibang galing na natatago. Ang mas maganda siguro sa recitation sila kumuha ng mataas na porsiyento ng marka hindi sa mga quiz quiz na iyan. Sa quiz quiz kasi na iyan ay nakakabisado lang(mga kabisote). Kaya pangit sa akin ang gurong bumabatay lang sa mga exam. Mga bookish na guro.
