We had our last day of school last Wednesday, July 14. "So long" to my grade 9 students who are moving up the educational ladder going to Senior HS next school year, and "see you later" to my grade 7-8 students who will be back again in September.
It was a good school year for me, I survived and thrived despite trying conditions. My student since her 7th grade, Bianka H., got more awards than the valedictorian during her graduation day last June 8. That was a special ed student, MY student, getting the PRIDE Award from Jefferson Jr HS and the Most Improved Student Award from DCPS.
She went back last Wednesday while I was cleaning up my room to give me a copy of her graduation picture. She wrote a note to me "I love you Ms. Angala, you will be in my heart always". That is more than a big win in a lottery!!!!
I believe my co-Filipino teachers touched at least a student's heart again in their classrooms this school year. Next year will be a better year for all of us...
Filipino teacher wraps up first year in Baltimore
The (Baltimore) Sun concludes a series of occasional articles profiling Filipino special-education teacher Aileen Mercado, who was recruited by the Baltimore school district to ease a teacher shortage in hard-to-fill fields. Mercado expected American pupils to talk back to teachers more than Filipino children do, but she was stunned by the high rate of student turnover. The Sun (Baltimore) (free registration) (6/16)

I am almost certain that your group have succeeded where past US teachers failed, and the worthy exemplary Baltimore group left positive impact which will be felt and thus improve the lots of public schoolchildren in Baltimore.
