South Carolina special educator wins Teacher of the Year award

Katie Ryan is the second teacher in a row from Trident Academy, a South Carolina independent school for children with learning disabilities, to win the state independent schools' elementary Teacher of the Year award. Ryan, a science teacher, uses hands-on projects to teacher her fourth- and fifth-grade students for environmental and other programs. "Our students learn so much better by doing recycling instead of talking about recycling," she said. The Post and Courier (Charleston, S.C.)
