Report: Down syndrome more common than thought

Birth defects including Down syndrome and cleft lip occur more often in the U.S. than experts believed, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report concluded that one child in every 733 live births has Down syndrome, compared with the previously believed one in every 800 to 1,000 births, and cleft lip occurs in about one in every 1,000 births.
